Why upgrade your consumer unit?
Your consumer unit, often called a fuse box, distributes electricity around your property and protects against electrical faults. Whether you're replacing an older fuse board, renovating, or adding circuits for an EV charger, we'll assess your existing system and recommend a suitable replacement.
An older consumer unit doesn't automatically need replacing because of its age. An upgrade may be appropriate if:
- The existing unit has damaged or deteriorated components
- There's inadequate protection for planned alterations
- Replacement parts are obsolete or hard to obtain
- You're experiencing recurring electrical faults
- You're renovating and need additional circuits
- An EICR has identified defects requiring attention
What your new consumer unit can include
We install FuseBox consumer units, with protective devices selected to suit your installation:
- Individual RCBO protection per circuit
- Surge protection devices (SPDs)
- Suitable main switching
- Clearly labelled circuits
- Spare capacity for the future
- Testing & certification
Individual RCBO protection means a fault on one circuit won't unnecessarily switch off others, so a faulty kettle won't take out your lights.
What a replacement involves
- Assessing the existing installation and earthing arrangements
- Carrying out appropriate checks before replacement
- Safely isolating the supply and removing the old unit
- Installing the new consumer unit and protective devices
- Testing the installation and completing certification
- Labelling the circuits and explaining your new equipment
A typical domestic replacement can often be completed in one working day. Any existing defects that could affect the safety of the replacement are discussed with you before work proceeds.
Prices: typical single-phase domestic consumer unit replacements start from £650 + VAT, subject to assessment. Correcting existing defects, upgrading earthing or bonding, or relocating the unit may affect the final quotation.
Consumer unit questions
How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
A typical domestic replacement can often be completed within one working day, depending on the condition and complexity of the installation. Power will be off during parts of the work, and extra time may be needed if existing wiring defects or inadequate earthing are found.
Do I need to replace my old fuse box?
Not automatically. Older units may lack RCD protection, individual circuit protection and surge protection, but replacement is only recommended where the existing unit is damaged, deteriorated, unsuitable for alterations or can't take additional circuits.
